Kay Ellison, director of the Colorado Prison Museum

Cañon City (Colorado) — Kay's smile is serious. That's because she's truly happy to be running this museum. After all, it's better than being retired (since 2003 in her case) after spending a good deal of her life with the Colorado Department of Corrections. People love jails around here. Incidentally, the museum, located inside a former women's jail (the Women's Correctional Facility, built in 1935), has done very nicely. It has had 225,000 visitors since it opened in 1988. I don't know why death is always so fascinating to everybody, says Kay Ellison, but everybody loves the gas chamber. You know, they always want to go out and see the gas chamber and the mock-up of the death table, the lethal injection table.
