Donna Como, former manager of prison units and programs

Somewhere in Colorado — As we reached Donna Como's house, up there in the mountains about forty miles from Fremont County, we ran into a car graveyard. The landowner's fault - a hobby mechanic. Ruins that were like all-too-perfect symbols of what was in store for us. Donna Como's features betray the ordeals this woman has been through. Donna is currently suing one of her former employees, a leading player in the private prison industry. She opened the door of her refuge to us. And spoke to us of her fears, her worries, of everything she'd seen and shouldn't have seen. It was very dark in her log cabin. That's how you live up here in the mountains, she told us. The large screen of a large TV sheds the only light in the living room. Winter must be tough and long here; it must be beautiful. Nowadays Donna Como works for a construction company. She follows up on the contracts. And doesn't think twice about speaking out about the ills of prison system that she herself had served: I can understand that states and the federal government get into a situation where they don't have the funds to build any new prisons. But there are other solutions... Changing the criminal laws is probably not going to be popular with people, but it's better than carrying on like this... Renting out human life...
